Who Am I?

Hacking into the Science Museum

Rummaging through the archives

What objects can tell the stories of young trans people?

Blythe House is the store where the Science Museum keep all of their objects and artefacts that are not currently on display. As part of the What Makes Your Gender? project the participants visited the stores to rummage through the archive to seek out particular objects that related to our heritage.

We came across objects that showed us how science and medicine has played its part in pathologising transgender lives and chart the relationship with a historical and socio-politic of mental health and treatments. In addition there were toys that were used in the 1960s for scientific studies carried out for testing gender behaviour and there was Electric Shock Therapy equipment.
